Preventing Unconscious Skin Damage

Reduce skin damage caused by unconscious scratching during sleep.

The hardest part of managing eczema isn’t controlling the itch while you are awake—it’s controlling what happens when you are completely unconscious. During deep sleep, the brain’s defense mechanisms are lowered, and scratching becomes an involuntary reflex. You can fall asleep with the best intentions, only to wake up to fresh skin damage, inflammation, and an increased risk of infection.

When skin is repeatedly torn open during sleep, it enters a chronic state of trauma, making it incredibly difficult for the skin barrier to repair itself.

To reduce this unconscious skin damage, a multi-layered approach is required. First, trim and file fingernails completely smooth. Second, apply your heavy emollients right before putting on specialized anti-scratch clothing. Unlike standard loose pajamas that shift and expose raw skin, form-fitting protective sleeves and garments keep the skin covered and secure. Even if the scratching motion occurs subconsciously, the smooth, flat-seamed fabric glides over the skin rather than tearing it apart. By neutralizing the damage caused by fingernails, you give your skin the uninterrupted hours it needs to regenerate.
